about

Diversity photos is a celebration of diversity on earth in all its forms be it biological, cultural, ethnic, racial or gender related. Presented here is a collection of photos taken around the world since 1990 by photographer and writer Rod Harbinson. As well as including images of natural beauty and importance such as rainforests, it also documents the people who inhabit the land and those struggling for its protection and the rights to livelihood against unsustainable and destructive forces.

This age of globalisation is causing rapid changes to the way we live. Agricultural and industrial practices are changing and cities growing, with a dramatic impact on societies and the environment. As local communities struggle to survive many traditional ways of life are dying out. Meanwhile new communities are being formed by people striving to create socially supportive networks and to define values and ways of living on which a truly sustainable future may be based. Many of the photos here document the struggles, changes, survival and initiatives that have taken place since 1990.

Diversity photos is intended as a resource for picture editors, art directors and designers or anyone else requiring photos on the topics here for publications towards a better world. The website began in 2002 as a way of making the photos more easily available.

Since 1990 Rod Harbinson has been working to expose and stop destructive abuses of the environment and the people inhabiting it. During this period he has travelled throughout Europe and Asia. He has produced several books and documentaries and has worked as editor of a number of magazines and journals. His photos and articles have been widely published in books, newspapers and magazines around the world.
